E-Bike Fenders: Coverage, Tire Fit & Buying Checklist
For an e-bike used on wet streets, choose fenders by coverage, tire compatibility and approved mounting—not wheel diameter alone. A front fender helps intercept spray toward your shoes and legs; a rear fender helps reduce spray toward your back and riders behind you. Confirm what comes with the bike, which parts need assembly and which replacement kit fits the exact model before ordering.
This guide uses our listed 20 × 4-inch step-through cargo bike as a buying example. It is a document-and-product comparison, not a rain test. “Mudguards” and “fenders” refer to the same accessory here.

What makes a useful commuter fender?
Look beyond the short section visible above the tire. Coverage around the wheel, width across the tire and the position of the ends all matter. The German cycling organization ADFC explains front and rear splash protection and favors longer coverage. It also cautions that heavy add-on mudflaps can overload lightweight fenders or stays. A longer-looking accessory is therefore not automatically a compatible upgrade.
For a daily office trip, consider the spray path toward your lower legs. For a ride with friends, consider rearward spray as well as your own clothing. For grocery trips, check the relationship between the rear fender, rack and luggage. These are inspection priorities; they do not establish how dry a particular rider or bag will stay.
Three questions to settle before buying
| Question | Evidence to request | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Are front and rear fenders included? | Written contents for the selected model, color and order | A lifestyle photo alone cannot confirm the delivered bundle. |
| Will the replacement fit? | Approved part number, tire size and mounting hardware | Two bikes with 20-inch wheels can have different tire widths, forks and mounting points. |
| Who finishes installation? | Current model instructions and assembly/service arrangements | Included equipment may still require assembly and inspection. |
A real example: the 20 × 4-inch cargo bike
The Step-Through Fat Tire Cargo Electric Bike – 750W, 801.6Wh is listed with 20 × 4-inch tires, an RST 100 mm suspension fork, a MIK HD-compatible rear rack and an included rack bag. Its product reference is Velotric Go Mad. The current product photos show front and rear fenders; the description explicitly names the rack bag but does not separately confirm a fender package. Ask for the supplied fender and hardware list rather than treating our edited scene images as a packing list.
The Go Mad owner’s manual has a front-fender assembly section on printed pages 18–19. It describes fork mounting and checking that the wheel is centered with a clear gap to the fender. Its pre-ride assembly checklist also includes fenders. This establishes that installation checks matter; it does not independently verify the contents of a specific store order.

Why “fits 20-inch wheels” is not enough
Wheel size is only the start of a compatibility check. The advertised tire width, actual tire profile, fork shape, mounting points, stays and nearby hardware must work together. A cargo rack or bag can introduce another clearance question. Replacing a tire with a different tread or width should trigger a fresh fit check rather than an assumption that the old fender still works.
SKS publishes its own width and clearance guidance. Use it to understand why both dimensions matter, not as an installation specification for the Go Mad or every fat-tire e-bike. Obtain the bike and fender makers’ requirements for the exact combination. An AI image cannot be used to measure a safe gap.
A useful message to a seller is: “For this exact model and tire, which front and rear fender kit and hardware are approved? Are both included, which parts arrive fitted, and can you provide the current installation instructions?” Keep the reply with the order details so a replacement can be matched later.
Inspect the assembled bike before commuting
Check for a centered fender, secure supports and any rubbing or interference, following the model’s instructions. If a fender moves, contacts the tire or appears damaged, resolve the problem before riding. Have a qualified bicycle mechanic assess an uncertain installation instead of bending, drilling or cutting parts to make them fit.
The Go Mad manual’s assembly section and torque table present differing fender-related torque figures. This guide intentionally does not select a number from those passages: ask the manufacturer or a qualified service provider to clarify the exact fastener and current instruction before tightening. That is particularly useful when arranging delivery assembly.

Choose for your actual trip
- Daily commuting: prioritize approved front and rear coverage, documented assembly and easy access to replacement hardware.
- Grocery runs: confirm the fender remains clear with the approved rack and luggage arrangement. A rack bag’s inclusion does not establish waterproofness.
- Occasional fair-weather rides: consider whether an approved removable option suits your use, but confirm the complete mounting system before purchasing one.
Browse our cargo e-bike collection to compare carrying layouts. For separate questions about exposure to rain, read our e-bike water-resistance guide. Fenders intercept wheel spray; they do not change an electrical component’s water-resistance rating.
Frequently asked questions
Do fat tires mean I need different fenders?
Check the approved width and mounting arrangement for the actual tire and bike. Matching wheel diameter alone is insufficient, especially when comparing narrow commuter tires with a listed 20 × 4-inch tire.
Are the fenders in these pictures guaranteed to arrive installed?
No. The scenes are AI edits of the listed product photo. Confirm the order’s contents and required assembly with the seller. The Go Mad manual includes front-fender installation instructions.
Can fenders keep all rain off me?
No. They address wheel spray, not all falling rain or splash from other traffic. This article makes no measured dryness claim.
Can I use a generic clearance measurement?
Use the current requirements for the exact bike, tire and fender system. Do not transfer another manufacturer’s general figure to an unverified installation.
